First of all, let me introduce you to my take on DIY: TIY is try it yourself. DIY is more of a command, right? Instead, TRY it…..see if you like it, see if it’s something you want to make, see if it’s up your alley. It might not be, but you tried! Haven’t we all seen those Pinterest pins comparing them to the actual, epic fail? That’s a lot of pressure. So, yeah, welcome to TIY!
We are a short three weeks until our youngest’s high school graduation & party so this weekend included some serious crunch time crafting. At first, we were planning the traditional school colors: red & blue so of course my junking excursions have been on the hunt in this color duo, until….this web post came along: http://karaspartyideas.com/2013/07/graduation-party.html The color combo of aqua, squash, papaya pink, peach & cream made the youngest excited about the party, which that in itself is huge, so this was our jumping off point. Several ideas in the post caught our eye & we are doing the TIY. I had found the perfect sized red suitcase @ JunkStock in October for the cards idea but….now the wrong color so…..I painted it! Luckily the inside fabric color is a lighter blue. We are also taking the table runner idea but with painted Mason jars filled with flowers as the centerpieces. So far, here are a few pictures:
As you can see, when I opened up the suitcase, I needed to paint the inside lip around the edges. The red handle was another obstacle but some bright pink/cream washi tape did the trick!
The final result ^ We are pretty pleased & think we’ll keep in around in case it’s needed for bridal/wedding/baby showers in the future or lend it out too.
Ten jars, two colors each & each has different ribbon/rick rack/burlap/pearl accents. We didn’t do the sandpaper, scratch off the letters idea seen all over Pinterest, thinking the add-on’s are enough.
Here’s a different angle ^ This was the fun part for today. There is more to do but this weekend also included some junkin’ 🙂
Despite the dreary rain, I talked my folks into going with me to Fall In Love With Junk, a newer flea market venue in Oskaloosa, IA. The fairgrounds where the perfect setting: great parking, buildings, live music, photo-op booth & food. It was a mixed vibe between the Vintage & Made Fair in Des Moines & JunkStock in Omaha but on a much smaller scale. Here is their ‘flyer’ post from Facebook:
Their new Fall Show dates are September 17th & 18th. This is their second year & I can see this growing with any luck. I’ve decided to not post any negatives or even suggestions about the events I visit. These places touch each of us differently & who am I to say what works & what doesn’t. I’m so very grateful & happy to all the hardworking junkers who make these events happen! Take with you the positives, there are always positives & that’s what I’m going to share with you! Happy Junkin’ 🙂
